5 New Facebook Features Every Business Needs To Know About in 2017

Facebook is constantly updating, changing and adding new features to its website. There are so many new features constantly being added and changed that it is hard for small businesses to keep up.

Five of the latest new features include Page Templates, New Post Options, Preferred Page Audiences,  Broadcast Live Videos from your Desktop and Facebook Banner Sizes.

Each topic has been broken down into sections and explained simply so that it is easy to follow and implement!

1. Page Templates

Facebook page templates are one of the latest updates on Facebook Business Pages. Page templates allow page owners to choose from several dedicated page layouts and call to actions (CTA) buttons specifically for their business type.

What is a Call to Action or CTA?

A call to action is an image, text or button that prompts visitors to take action.

On Facebook, a CTA can be a link to your website that potential customers can click on, or in this case the button at the top of your Facebook page that prompts potential customers to ‘Learn More’, ‘Shop Now’or ‘Watch Video’.

In the image below you can see that the CTA on my own Facebook page is a ‘Learn More’ button. When the button is clicked potential readers will be diverted to the Jessica Belton Marketing website and potentially read the posts on it.

To find the Facebook Page Templates click on your business page, hit the settings tab at the top and then click edit page. It is here that you will find the template page where both templates and tabs can be chosen and edited.

There are several Facebook page templates that businesses can choose from. These templates include:

  • Standard

This is a standard all rounder template with buttons on the toolbar including like, follow, message and share.

This is the general template that all pages have prior to changing templates and tabs.

Below is an image of the Facebook template and information on everything that is included with it.

  • Shopping

The ‘Shopping’ template is designed specifically for businesses who wish to showcase their products. This template makes it easier for potential customers to view the businesses products and make a possible purchase.

It also allows businesses to tag products and services in posts uploaded. These will show up at the bottom of the post and are clickable so potential customers can click on the image, view the product and the products description.

The Shopping Template also has the CTA buttons at the top of the page including like, follow, message and share.

  • Restaurants & Cafes

Once the template which suits your business is chosen, the tabs which come with the specific templates can be edited.

The tabs can be rearranged to suit what is best for your own business. ‘Shop’ can be moved to the top position and ‘About Me’ underneath or ‘Photos’ can be moved to the top and ‘Videos’ below and so on and so forth.

When deciding which position you would like your tabs to be in, remember, think about the customer, what would they like to see first, what are they drawn to, what do they want to see and what will make them take action.

Tabs such as ‘Events’ and ‘Shop’ can be hidden from the page if these are not needed for your particular business. To hide the tabs click the settings button and on the right hand side click the ‘on’ slider to ‘off’. This will hide the tabs you wish to keep hidden from your page.

Tabs can also be added to your template. The tabs will differ depending on the Facebook Page Template used. To find the tabs that can be added click ‘Add Tabs’ button at the bottom of the templates page.

3. Preferred Page Audience

Facebook preferred page audience is one of Facebooks latest updates. It allows business page owners to define their target audience in terms of location,  age, gender, interests and language.

The preferred Page Audience settings can be used as an audience optimization tool and an organic targeting tool to get your page posts in front of the most relevant audience possible.

This feature is perfect for businesses who operate in a specific location such as brick and mortar shops, businesses which are location based such as plumbers, heat merchants, gardeners, landscapers etc. and businesses that provide their services in specific countries.

To find the business pages preferred page audience option click on setting on the business page and you will find the preferred page audience tab on the left hand side list under ‘People and Other Pages’.

Remember if you create a preferred page audience and it is not working for your business, you can always go back and change the settings.

4. Facebook Banner Image Sizes

Facebook has updated its business page templates to ensure all information is seen correctly on both desktop and mobile.

This means that the images designed for the cover photos need to be optimised so all information is seen on both desktop and mobile by your potential customers.

facebook-image-for-desktop-mobile-jessica-belton-marketing

From the image above you can see that images suitable for desktop need to be 828 pixels (px) wide by 315 px in height. To optimise for mobile visitors the size needs to be 536 px in width by 315 px in height.

To ensure that the imagery is optimised for both desktop and mobile, the main part of the information needs to be centrally located within the cover photo image as seen in the highlighted image area above.

5. Broadcast Live Videos from Desktop Computers

Facebook Live Broadcast has been around for a while now but this feature could only be used on a mobile device.

Now Facebook has introduced the live broadcast to desktop computers. The application acts the same as it does on mobile, it is easy to find and easy to use.

To find the feature click on the comment box on the business page and navigate down to the start a live video option. To begin type what the live video is about and click next. A separate tab will open and prompt you to allow Facebook to use your camera and microphone. Click allow and a preview of the view from your camera can be seen. Once you are ready to go click the ‘Go Live’ button at the bottom.

Once you go live people who have already liked your page will receive a notification stating that you are broadcasting. Facebook will also share this with other interested parties through their organic reach.

If you are not ready to post a live video on your business page, why not try it on your personal page! Click ‘Only Me’ so that your Facebook friends cannot see the post and play around with the feature until you are more confident in how to use it.

I would love to hear how you got on with any of the features mentioned. Let me know in the comments section and if you have any questions reach out to me via email or through Jessica Belton Marketing Facebook Group.
